Jacobean Oak Vanity
 
Originally crafted as an English oak bureau in the early 20th century, this characterful piece dates to circa. 1910–1925 and has now been carefully restored and reimagined as a traditional countertop bathroom vanity. At around a century old, it brings something that newly manufactured bathroom furniture simply cannot reproduce: genuine age, craftsmanship and the individual character that develops in timber over generations of use.
 
The bureau was made during the popularity of the Jacobean Revival, a movement that looked back to the substantial forms and craftsmanship of English furniture from the 17th century. That influence is particularly evident in the wonderfully proportioned base. Heavy baluster-turned front legs are joined by a low stretchered frame, giving the piece an architectural quality and a reassuring sense of permanence. The contrast between the relatively simple cabinet above and the more decorative turned legs below is one of the details that gives this vanity its distinctive personality.
 
The oak itself is equally important to the story. Across the two broad drawer fronts there is a wonderful variation in the grain, including particularly expressive figuring through the lower drawer.
 
Rather than attempting to make century-old furniture look new, our restoration process is intended to preserve precisely this kind of character. The piece was carefully stripped back before being refinished in a medium oak stain, bringing warmth and definition to the grain whilst allowing the natural variation, patina and signs of age within the timber to remain part of the finished piece. It has then been sealed in a clear satin lacquer, providing the protection required against moisture, water dwell, steam and vapour in a bathroom environment without hiding the character of the oak beneath.
 
Importantly, we have also been able to retain the bureau's original drop-ring handles and escutcheon detailing. The hardware has been carefully cleaned and restored rather than replaced, preserving another tangible connection to the furniture's original life. Details such as these are something we particularly value when restoring antique furniture; where an original component can be saved, it remains part of the piece and part of its history.
 
Inside, our in-house carpentry team has carefully modified the original drawers around the new basin waste and plumbing. The photographs show just how much of the original drawer space has been retained, with the upper drawer intelligently constructed around the central plumbing while the generous lower drawer remains available for bathroom storage. It is this balance between preservation and practicality that allows an antique bureau to function as a genuine piece of bathroom furniture rather than simply becoming a decorative shell.
 
Above the oak sits a custom-cut Amber stone worktop with a hall bullnose edging profile, individually drilled and polished for this particular conversion. Predominantly white with delicate warm gold veining, the stone provides a clean contrast against the richness of the medium oak while its warmer detailing complements the antique brass fittings beautifully. A matching stone upstand runs along the rear, giving the installation a more complete, furniture-like finish while also providing a practical barrier between the vanity and the wall.
 
Taking centre stage is a spacious oval countertop basin, its softly rounded form working particularly well with the curves of the turned Jacobean-style legs below. Alongside it sits a tall traditional mixer tap in antique brass, finished with a white lever accent and accompanied by a matching antique brass pop-up waste. The combination of white ceramic, softly veined stone, warm brass and aged oak feels considered without becoming overly coordinated, allowing each material to retain its own character.
 
There is something particularly fitting about giving a piece such as this a new purpose. When it was made around a century ago, its designers were themselves looking backwards, taking inspiration from English furniture created several centuries earlier. Today, rather than allowing that furniture to become obsolete, we have taken it forward again, retaining its turned legs, stretchered construction, beautifully figured oak, original hardware and unmistakable Jacobean Revival character while adapting it for a completely different part of the home.
 
The result remains recognisably the antique bureau it has always been. Its history hasn't been sanded away or concealed; it can still be seen in the grain, patina, original fittings and subtle variations accumulated over its lifetime. We've simply restored what was already there, introduced the functionality required for a modern bathroom, and given a century-old piece of English furniture the opportunity to continue its story.
