Edwardian Oak Vanity
 
Crafted during the Edwardian era, circa 1901–1910, this antique oak bureau comes from a period when British furniture was beginning to favour simpler lines, honest materials and craftsmanship that allowed the timber itself to do much of the talking.
 
More than a century later, those qualities remain.
 
Originally created as a functional piece of household furniture, the bureau has now been completely restored and thoughtfully reimagined as a traditional countertop bathroom vanity, preserving the character of its past whilst preparing it for an entirely new chapter.
 
The beauty of this particular piece lies in its restraint. Strong, straight legs are joined by a low stretcher, giving the cabinet an elegant but reassuringly substantial stance. Above, two broad drawer fronts allow the grain of the antique oak to take centre stage, complemented by the original brass drop handles that have been carefully cleaned, restored and polished rather than replaced.
It is precisely these small details that we believe are worth saving.
 
The restoration began by carefully stripping away the accumulated finishes of its previous life, taking the bureau back to its natural timber and revealing the grain beneath. The oak was then refinished in a rich Walnut stain, bringing greater depth and warmth to the wood whilst highlighting the natural variations that have developed throughout its lifetime.
 
A professionally applied clear satin lacquer completes the restoration, protecting the timber against moisture, steam, water vapour and the everyday demands of a bathroom environment without hiding the texture and individuality of the antique oak beneath.
 
The transformation continues above with a beautifully contrasting Misterio stone worktop. Its clean white ground is crossed by distinctive flowing veins, bringing movement and interest to the stone whilst creating a striking contrast against the walnut-toned oak. A refined chamfered edging profile keeps the finish crisp and understated, allowing both the stone and original cabinet to share the attention.
 
Sitting proudly above the worktop is a generously proportioned oval countertop basin. Its smooth, sculptural form softens the strong lines of the Edwardian cabinet below, whilst a tall traditional-style mixer tap in antique brass introduces warmth and complements the restored original hardware.
 
Behind the drawer fronts, the transformation becomes almost invisible. Our in-house carpentry team has carefully re-engineered the internal structure to accommodate the basin waste and modern plumbing whilst retaining as much usable drawer space as possible. From the outside, its Edwardian character remains beautifully intact; inside, it has been adapted to work effortlessly within a modern bathroom.
 
It was never created to be disposable. The oak, the joinery and the original brass fittings have already survived for well over a century. Rather than replacing that history with something newly manufactured, we have allowed it to evolve.
