Georgian Revival Vanity

Created during the Edwardian era, circa 1901–1910, this handsome antique oak bureau looks further back for its inspiration. Designed in the Georgian Revival style, it belongs to a period when British furniture makers were rediscovering the balanced proportions, restrained detailing and enduring craftsmanship associated with the great Georgian furniture traditions of the 18th and early 19th centuries.

More than a century later, those qualities have given us something worth saving.

Originally built as a substantial three-drawer bureau, the piece has been completely restored and reimagined as a traditional countertop bathroom vanity, retaining the presence of the original furniture whilst introducing everything required for modern-day use.

There is an honesty to the design that immediately draws the eye to the oak itself. Broad drawer fronts display the natural movement and figuring of the antique timber, framed by simple architectural lines and grounded by traditional bracket feet. Rather than relying on excessive ornamentation, its character comes from proportion, material and craftsmanship.

The handles were carefully removed during restoration, each has been cleaned, polished and reinstated, preserving another small but important connection to the bureau's past.

The oak itself has been carefully stripped back, restored and refinished, reviving the warmth and depth of the timber without removing the subtle variations that reveal its age. A protective clear satin lacquer has then been professionally applied, creating a durable barrier against moisture, steam and water vapour whilst allowing the grain and character of the antique oak to remain beautifully visible.

Above the restored cabinet sits an elegant Amber quartz worktop. Predominantly white, its surface is broken by delicate trails of soft golden veining, bringing lightness to the substantial oak beneath whilst introducing just enough warmth to connect the two materials. The stone has been finished with a Half Bullnose edging profile, gently rounding the perimeter for a softer, more traditional appearance.

A generously proportioned rectangular countertop basin creates a striking focal point above. Its clean geometry contrasts beautifully with the century-old oak, demonstrating how traditional furniture and contemporary bathroom design can sit comfortably together.

Rising behind the basin is a tall traditional-style chrome mixer tap, accompanied by a matching chrome pop-up waste. The polished finish introduces a crisp contrast against the warmth of the timber and the subtle gold tones within the stone, giving the finished vanity a lighter, more versatile character.

Behind those three original drawer fronts lies considerably more work than first meets the eye.

Each drawer has been individually re-engineered by our in-house carpentry team to accommodate the basin waste and modern plumbing whilst maximising the usable storage that remains. From the outside, the integrity and proportions of the original bureau are preserved; internally, it has been carefully adapted to perform an entirely new role.

And therein lies the beauty of restoring furniture such as this.

Its first life has not been erased to create the second.

The antique oak, original hardware, Georgian Revival character and craftsmanship remain unmistakably present. We have simply taken something built to endure and given it a purpose its original maker could never have imagined.

Over a century of history, restored for a new generation.
