Antique Oak Vanity Unit

There are pieces that simply furnish a room and then there are pieces that shape its atmosphere entirely. This antique oak vanity belongs firmly to the latter.

With over a century of history behind it, this beautifully restored piece began life as a traditional writing bureau before being thoughtfully reimagined into a striking bathroom vanity. Its transformation has been approached with restraint and respect, preserving the quiet elegance and craftsmanship that made the original piece so enduring.

Compact in scale yet rich in presence, the vanity sits comfortably within both classic and contemporary interiors, offering warmth, authenticity and a sense of permanence that newly manufactured furniture rarely achieves.

The oak itself tells much of the story. Carefully stripped back by hand, the original finish was removed without disturbing the natural patina that had developed over decades. This allows the timber’s depth, grain and subtle tonal variation to remain beautifully visible. A Jacobean oak stain has then been applied to enrich and deepen the character of the wood, resulting in a finish that feels naturally aged rather than artificially distressed. Every surface carries texture, movement and quiet detail that only time can create.

Its original form remains wonderfully intact. The balanced proportions, clean panelled frontage and distinctive acorn legs lend a sense of understated refinement, while the original antique handles, delicately etched with “Made in England”, provide an authentic finishing touch. These details anchor the piece firmly in its heritage and offer a level of individuality impossible to replicate.

Practicality has been integrated discreetly and intelligently. Internally adapted by our carpentry team, the drawers provide functional bathroom storage while retaining their original external appearance. Finished internally in Farrow & Ball’s “Railings”, the contrast introduces a subtle contemporary edge hidden neatly beneath the traditional exterior.

Above, the crisp Misterio stone worktop introduces balance and lightness. Predominantly off-white with soft veining running throughout, the surface complements the richness of the oak without overpowering it. Finished with a clean chamfered edge profile, it adds a tailored, architectural quality to the overall composition.

The countertop basin, elegantly poised between rectangular and oval in form, sits effortlessly upon the stone surface. Paired with a traditional antique brass mixer tap and matching waste, the materials work together harmoniously, each one enhancing the warmth and sophistication of the next.

Beyond aesthetics, durability has been carefully considered. The entire piece has been sealed in a clear satin lacquer to protect against moisture, vapour and the demands of everyday bathroom use. This ensures the oak remains protected while allowing the natural beauty and character of the timber to remain fully visible.

As shown in the space, the vanity creates a beautifully composed focal point, framed by soft wall panelling, warm brass lighting and natural textures that enhance its heritage appeal without feeling overly formal. The result is a bathroom setting that feels calm, curated and quietly luxurious.

This is not a piece that demands attention through excess. Its appeal lies in balance, between old and new, beauty and practicality, craftsmanship and function.

A thoughtful choice for interiors where character matters and subtlety speaks louder than scale.
