The Singer Vanity
There was a time when a Singer sewing machine was one of the hardest-working pieces of furniture in the home.
Positioned by a window to catch the daylight, it would have spent decades helping create and repair everything from everyday clothing to treasured family heirlooms. Built with a level of craftsmanship rarely seen today, these remarkable machines became fixtures of family life, passed from one generation to the next.
This beautifully restored early 20th-century Singer sewing machine has been thoughtfully reimagined as a bathroom vanity while preserving the features that made the original so distinctive.
The oak cabinet has been fully stripped and refinished with a protective satin lacquer, enhancing the natural beauty of the timber while providing durability for modern bathroom use. Rich grain patterns and gentle signs of age remain visible throughout, ensuring the character developed over many decades is retained.
The original cast iron treadle frame has been sympathetically restored, repainted and clear coated, preserving the elegance and craftsmanship of the original design. Bearing the unmistakable Singer name, the ironwork remains a striking reminder of an era when even practical household furnishings were designed with beauty and purpose in mind.
Above, a luxurious amber stone worktop with subtle gold veining introduces a refined contemporary contrast. Finished with a demi-bullnose edge profile and complemented by decorative oak trims and a matching upstand, the worktop sits beautifully alongside the restored timber and ironwork. A traditional oval countertop basin is paired with an antique brass tap and matching pop-up waste, completing the piece with timeless period styling.
Storage has been carefully incorporated into the design through three drawers, including the original central fold-down compartment, finished internally in Farrow & Ball Pitch Black for a sophisticated finishing touch. The result is a vanity that remains practical for everyday living while honouring its heritage.
What makes this piece so special is its authenticity. The treadle base, decorative cast iron framework and original cabinet proportions remain instantly recognisable, preserving the spirit of the Singer while allowing it to serve a completely new purpose.
Once powered by foot and driven by skill, it now stands as a celebration of craftsmanship, restoration and enduring design, proof that the finest pieces are never truly obsolete, only waiting to be appreciated in a different way.
From the sewing room to the bathroom, a century of craftsmanship beautifully preserved.
