Antique Mahogany Bow-Front Vanity Unit

Some furniture earns its character over decades. This remarkable Victorian mahogany chest has had nearly two centuries.

Dating from the early Victorian period, circa. 1830–1850, this elegant bow-front chest of drawers has been carefully restored and thoughtfully transformed into a bathroom vanity, allowing its craftsmanship and beauty to continue serving a purpose in the modern home.

The first thing that draws the eye is the timber itself. Richly figured mahogany flows across the curved drawer fronts in dramatic ribbons of grain, creating movement and depth that changes subtly as the light shifts throughout the day. The warm reddish-brown tones, deep natural figuring and gentle signs of age are not imperfections, but reminders of a life already well lived.

Its bow-front form gives the piece a graceful presence rarely found in modern furniture. The sweeping curved façade softens the silhouette, creating an elegant profile that feels both refined and inviting. Original wooden knobs and brass escutcheons have been retained, preserving the understated charm that has defined the piece for generations.

While the exterior remains faithful to its Victorian origins, the interior has been carefully adapted for modern practicality. Our in-house carpentry team has expertly re-engineered the drawer internals, allowing the vanity to retain its original two-over-two drawer appearance whilst accommodating modern plumbing requirements. The result is a piece that balances authenticity with everyday usability.

Crowning the vanity is an Amber stone worktop, chosen for its ability to complement the richness of the mahogany without competing with it. Predominantly white in tone, delicate gold veining drifts across the surface, adding a subtle sense of luxury and lightness. The traditional ogee edge profile and shaped upstand provide an elegant finishing touch, enhancing the furniture-like quality of the piece.

At its centre sits a generous RAK Ceramics oval under-mounted basin, seamlessly integrated beneath the stone surface for a clean and timeless appearance. Chrome Hudson Reed three-hole crosshead taps and matching waste complete the arrangement, introducing a crisp contrast against the warmth of the timber and stone.

Every aspect of the restoration has been carried out with longevity in mind. The mahogany has been professionally refinished and sealed with a clear satin lacquer that complies with FIRA 5000 bathroom standards, providing protection against moisture, vapour and the demands of everyday bathroom use whilst allowing the natural beauty of the timber to remain fully visible.

This is more than a vanity unit. It is a genuine piece of Victorian furniture, rescued, restored and given a new purpose. A piece that carries nearly two centuries of history, craftsmanship and character into the heart of a modern home.

A piece that brings together craftsmanship, history and practicality in a way that feels both timeless and entirely individual.
