Originally built as a sideboard, this solid elm unit has been given a new purpose, carefully adapted into a bathroom vanity without losing the strength of its original identity. The process has been considered at every stage, allowing the piece to evolve rather than be altered beyond recognition.
Elm in todays age is increasingly rare and it shows. The surface carries a depth that cannot be replicated, a richly developed patina, pronounced grain, and natural movement throughout. These are not imperfections, but the very features that define it. Each mark, shift in tone and subtle irregularity reflects the passage of time, retained and respected rather than refinished away. The timber has been internally reinforced and stabilised, ensuring it is as functional as it is characterful.
Practicality has been thoughtfully integrated. The upper drawers have been reworked by our in-house craftsmen, now fully functional while maintaining their original appearance. Below, generous cupboard space offers ample room for everyday use, making the piece as usable as it is distinctive.
There is a weight and presence to its form. Its proportions feel substantial, its stance confident, a reminder of an era when furniture was built with permanence in mind. It holds the room rather than simply filling it.
The Misterio stone worktop introduces a lighter counterpoint. Its pale surface, traced with delicate veining, brings refinement without distraction. Set into this, a rectangular countertop basin adds a more architectural feel, its clean lines offering contrast against the organic texture of the elm. A chamfered edge completes the top with a subtle precision.
Antique brass fittings have been selected to sit naturally alongside the timber, drawing out its warmth and complementing the richness of the elm. The combination feels balanced, not forced, a quiet meeting of periods and materials.
Finished in a clear satin lacquer, the exterior remains honest to the original surface while being protected for daily use. The result is a finish that enhances rather than conceals, allowing the timber to remain the focal point.
