Georgian Revival Vanity
 
Originally crafted as an English oak bureau during the 1920s–1930s, this characterful piece has now been carefully restored and reimagined as a traditional countertop bathroom vanity. Made during the reign of King George V, its design deliberately looks further back into British furniture history, drawing upon the balanced proportions and understated detailing associated with the Georgian tradition.
 
This Georgian Revival country-style influence can be seen throughout the original cabinet. Three generously proportioned drawers are framed by moulded edges, while the simple bracket feet give the piece a grounded, traditional stance. There is a pleasing restraint to its design; rather than relying on elaborate carving or ornamentation, its character comes from proportion, construction and the natural beauty of the oak itself. The photographs particularly highlight the grain running across the broad drawer fronts, together with the darker figuring and subtle variations that have developed through age.
 
As with all of our furniture, we wanted to preserve that history rather than polish it away. The previous finish was completely stripped back to reveal the natural aged timber beneath, but the restoration was carried out sympathetically so that the patina, tonal variation and signs of age remain part of the piece. Antique furniture shouldn't look as though it left the workshop yesterday; those small variations are part of what distinguishes genuine old furniture from something newly manufactured to imitate it.
 
Once prepared, the oak was refinished in a medium oak stain, bringing warmth and depth back into the timber while accentuating its natural grain. The cabinet was then spray-finished in a clear satin lacquer, providing a durable protective surface against the moisture, water dwell, steam and vapour associated with everyday bathroom use without concealing the character beneath.
 
We were also able to retain the bureau's original drop handles, which have been carefully cleaned, polished and restored before being returned to their original positions. Their aged finish and decorative backplates sit beautifully against the warmth of the oak and provide another important connection to the furniture's original life.
 
Behind the three original drawer fronts, our in-house carpentry team has carefully reworked the internal construction around the new basin waste and plumbing. Rather than simply fixing the drawers permanently closed, the aim is always to preserve as much practical storage as the conversion allows. The result is a vanity that still functions very much as a piece of furniture, combining the storage of the original bureau with everything required of a modern bathroom unit.
Above the restored oak sits a custom-fitted Amber stone worktop, predominantly white with delicate warm gold veining running subtly through the surface. Its lighter colouring creates a crisp contrast against the richness of the medium oak, while those warmer veins complement the antique brass fittings and prevent the stone from feeling overly contemporary. The edge has been finished with a half bullnose profile, introducing a gently softened detail that sits naturally with the traditional proportions of the cabinet below.
 
Taking centre stage is a spacious rectangular ceramic countertop basin. Its generous proportions make it highly practical for everyday use, while the softly rounded corners prevent its more contemporary rectangular form from feeling at odds with the older furniture beneath. The clean white ceramic also allows the warmth and movement within the oak to remain the visual focus of the piece.
 
Completing the conversion is a tall traditional-style mixer tap in antique brass, detailed with a white handle accent and paired with a matching antique brass pop-up waste. Together, the warm brass, white ceramic, subtly veined stone and aged oak create a considered balance between traditional character and modern bathroom functionality.
 
There is something particularly appropriate about the history of this piece. Although made during the reign of George V, its original makers were themselves looking back to the furniture of an earlier Georgian age for inspiration. Almost a century later, we have continued that story in a different way, preserving the bureau's original proportions, bracket feet, moulded drawer fronts, hardware and beautifully aged oak while adapting it for a new generation and an entirely new purpose.
 
It hasn't been made to look like an antique bathroom vanity. It has been made from a genuine piece of old English furniture, complete with the grain, patina and individuality acquired over decades of use. The function may have changed, but the character that made the original piece worth preserving remains very much intact.
